Three significant obstacles that were used to suppress African American voting in the South included literacy tests, which often had confusing questions designed to disenfranchise Black voters; poll taxes, which required payment to vote and disproportionately affected low-income individuals; and understanding clauses, where registrars could arbitrarily determine whether a voter understood the Constitution or other documents. These discriminatory practices were aimed at maintaining white supremacy and political control in the region.
