What is the job responsibility of a maitre d'?

The maître d' (short for the French "maître d'hôtel" meaning "master of hotel") is the head host in a restaurant. Their job is to welcome and seat guests, take reservations, supervise the wait staff and make sure that the guests have a satisfactory dining experience.
