What made rizal a national hero?

Although he has never been officially recognized as such, Jose Rizal is regarded as a true National Hero of the Philippines because he was a good role model, exemplary patriot and tried to gain peace and independence for his country in a peaceful way. He ultimately died defending his ideals.
