How did Saint Lawrence become a saint?

St. Lawrence, deacon and martyr, worked with Pope Sixtus II. When Sixtus and six other deacons were martyred, Lawrence was left alone as head of the church. He knew that he would soon be martyred so did everything to disperse any properties of the church so that the Roman government could not confiscate it. When he was told by the Romans to bring in all the Church's wealth, he gathered together all the poor, sick and blind he could find and took them to the judge where he announced that "these are the wealth of the Church." He was thrown into prison and then killed by roasting him on a grill. While dying it is reported that he told the executioner to "turn me over. I'm done on this side."
