You can be exposed to a hazardous material by:
- inhalation - breathing it in so it can damage the lungs or be passed to the blood for circulation through the body
- ingestion - swallowing it
- skin contact - coming in direct contact with something that damages the skin
- skin absorption - coming in contact with something that does not damage the skin but moves through it and is then circulated through the body to sites where it can cause damage
- injection - having it inserted into the muscle or blood through a needle or a cut or other damage to the skin
