How did Marthas vinyard get its name?

Martha's Vineyard got its name from Bartholomew Gosnold, an English explorer who arrived in 1602. He named the island "Martha's Vineyard" in honor of his daughter, Martha, and because of the wild grapes he found growing there, referring to the area as a "vineyard."
