Why are gases always stored in cylinders instead of rectangular containers?

Gases are stored at high pressures. A cylinder is very strong and uses less material than a box. The strongest container for the amount of material used is a sphere. The cylinder is a compromise that provides a good strength to material ratio with an easy to transport flat bottom.
