How do you know if the head gasket has blown on your 1994 BMW 325TD auto?

Oil mixing with coolant? Coolant mixing with oil? Run engine to normal operating temperature, remove oil dipstick and let a drop fall on hot part of engine - oil will smoke coolant will "sizzle" White smoke from tail pipe when engine is at normal operating temperature? Engine misfire from 2 adjacient cylinders?
