A physical feature can be a focus for Historical study if it was the centre of controversy, the Kyber pass, the English Channel, Offa's Dyke, Hadrian's Wall. Natural as well as man-made features can shape a country's identity as well as dictate how a specific community lives, develops and what legacy they leave behind, for instance Silbury Hill, Maiden Castle, Newgrange, Stonehenge. They can also shape a country's legends, become a focus for myth to grow, Glastonbury, Sherwood Forest, Tintagel Castle. England is richer for having Robin Hood and King Arthur and yet the original incarnation of each would not have been what they are now perceived to be.
