How long should it take for a mechanic to fix a head gasket?

I am beginning to confront a head gasket issue myself for my 93 Taurus. Spoke with my mechanic (whom I trust) today and got the impression that it is a same-day fix but I can tell you that he said it will cost $1,000 for the repair. I've done this myself on a 1998 Ford Taurus, 3.0 OHV. Consider that I am not a professional mechanic, and I do not have air powered tools. I can say that since I am now familiar with it, it would take me about 4 to 5 hours to disassemble, replace the gasket, and reassemble. A mechanic should be able to do it in around 4 hours easy, but it all depends on how hard it is to access your engine.
