Why were cigarettes made?

It was a simple way of smoking. You didn't have to carry around a bulky pipe. The same tobacco, the papers were easier to carry than leaves to roll the tobacco in. The cigarette was a way to make a 'small' cigar without the size usually needed when using a tobacco leaf. And they were not likely to get broken like a larger cigar.
