Is word choice important in society?

Yes people tend to judge you on a couple of things. They judge you on how you look and act, but also on how you talk. If you talk too polite people will think you are kind of a know-it-all. But if you talk to impolite they will think of you as rude and well, impolite. So yes Word choice is pretty important.
