The Nelson Mandela Bridge, which connects the Johannesburg neighborhoods of Braamfontein and Newtown, was completed in 2003 at a cost of approximately 70 million South African Rand (around $10 million at the time). The bridge was constructed as part of urban renewal efforts in Johannesburg and is named in honor of the former South African president and anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela.
