There is no evidence either way, except:

  • The legend is carved into stone near the town of Bleddgelert, Nortwest Wales.

The element of the story that makes it unlikely is the identification of a wolf as the antagonist. It is highly unlikely that a wolf would even approach human habitation, even in the most lean time. In a fight between the average dog and wolf, a wolf is most likely to be the victor. Beside being highly unlikely that a wolf would invade a human domicile, for it to be able to pass through closed doors, behind which the story claims the child was, is highly improbable.

Legends change as time passes though. There may have been some elements of truth to the story, and it does seem likely that a father who believed his dog had killed his son would have behaved as the one in the story.
