Julius Caesar did not rule an empire in the traditional sense, as he was never an emperor. Instead, he was a pivotal figure in the late Roman Republic, serving as consul multiple times from 59 BC and later becoming dictator perpetuo (dictator for life) in 44 BC. His rule effectively lasted from 49 BC, when he crossed the Rubicon and initiated a civil war, until his assassination on March 15, 44 BC.
