Where army medics during World War 2 qualified doctors or doctors in training or were they more like ambulance paramedics?

My grandfather was a ww2 medic (pacific theater to be more spacific) their more like ambulance paramedics he didn't talk much about the war but he did state how when he did go into battle he wouldn't wear his med helment because jap. sniper's loved to pic of med's
