In the 1800s, firefighters were often referred to as "firemen." Many cities had volunteer fire brigades made up of local citizens who responded to fires, while some had paid professional firefighters. The profession was dangerous and challenging, as firefighting techniques and equipment were much less advanced than today. These early firemen used hand-drawn pumps and buckets to combat blazes, relying heavily on community efforts to extinguish fires.
