Members of almost all religious groups have been persecuted unfairly by members of other faiths. Religion may not be the only cause of all instances of persecution, but it is a leading cause:
- The early Christians were at times persecuted by the pagans, although not to anywhere near the extent that later Christian tradition asserts
- Pagans of the Roman Empire were unfairly persecuted by the Christians, as soon as Christians were in a position to do so.
- Gnostic Christians were persecuted by Catholic-Orthodox Christians.
- Jews have been persecuted by Christians, down through the ages.
- Christians and Muslims persecuted each other.
- Hindus were persecuted by Muslims in India
- Buddhists were persecuted by Muslims and Hindus in India
- Zoroastrian, Druze and Bahai followers are persecuted by Muslims
People have also been persecuted because of their race or sexual orientation.
