Why do people take opium?

Opium is the World's oldest and most widely used drug. The ancient Greeks mixed it with wine. It induces a warm feeling of relaxation, a sense of security and protection, and a dissipation of pain, fear, hunger, tension and anxiety. In short, they do it because it feels good.
