the ruling elite still was made up mostly of 'titeled' people although the importance and power of guilds was rising. The church was also able to hold on and maintaine its' power. The life of serfs was somewhat improved by the apprentice system employed by guilds. There was finally a way for commoners to improve their lot in life. Improvements in manufacturing techniques increased availability of products-- most were still out of reach of the common people. Society was moving more and more to being commerce/manufacturing based.
