What group claimed San Diego first?

The first group to claim San Diego was the Spanish, led by explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. He was the first European to set foot on the West Coast of the present-day United States and claimed the area for Spain. Later, in 1769, the Spanish established the first permanent European settlement in California at San Diego, further solidifying their claim to the region.
