What is the purpose of grades?

The purpose of a "GRADING PLAN" is to determine whether or not earth retention is required. In some areas where grades are steep it also allows the fire department to get an idea as to whether the building is accessible and/or defendable. It is always best to verify CODE SPECIFIC information with your local Building Official and/or Building Department as local laws and codes do tend to vary somewhat from jurisdiction (town) to jurisdiction (town).
