What does providance of a gun mean?

Records that prove the line of ownership of a gun. It is spelled provenance. For example- this was Annie Oakley's pistol. I have records showing I bought it from John Doe, who bought it from the son of Charlie Rowe, Charlie bought it from Annie Oakley, and Annie bought it from the Baker Gun Company. It may consist of records, receipts, letters, photos, etc.
