What is a harniated disc?

A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner gel of a spinal disc bulges out through a tear in the tougher outer layer. This can lead to nerve compression, causing pain, numbness, or weakness in the back and limbs. Herniated discs often result from age-related wear and tear, injury, or excessive strain on the spine. Treatment may include physical therapy, medication, or, in severe cases, surgery.
