Who settled New York before English?

Before the English, New York was originally settled by the Dutch in the early 17th century, who established the colony of New Netherland. The city of New Amsterdam, located on the southern tip of Manhattan, served as the capital of this colony. The area was also inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Lenape, before European settlement. The English seized control of New Amsterdam in 1664, renaming it New York.
