What is the scientific name and classification of a dog?

The domestic dog is called Canis familiaris. Dog-like animals are all canines - wolves, foxes, dingoes - this comes from the genus name of Canis. Dogs evolved from a wolf-like ancestor that partnered with humans thousands of years ago. Dogs and wolves are different species, but they can interbreed. Wolf-dog hybrids are not very good pets, however, and are more like wolves than dogs.
