I recall Mercury once surveyed and determined that the typical Outboard Motor in recreational use gets 20 hours running time per year. Heavy use is considerred 40 hours running on up in recreational craft - not in charter use.

Obviously commercial use, like running lobstering, crab catching and so forth there is easily 20 hours per week running. This is why there are commercial use models. For example, Evinrude used to put their V4 powerheads on the V6 rated lower units. There are other examples.

This is why I am wary of used--- one or two year old motors in areas where there is commercial fishing. They have already had more time on them than a recreational user would accrue in 20 years.
