He was previously the Deputy Prime Minister from 2004 January 7 to 2009 April 3. Najib also held other cabinet positions including Ministers of Defense, Education, and Finance. He is also the son of 2nd Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak and nephew of 3rd Prime Minister Tun Hussein Onn.
