The English Word legend means an account or story from the past, often regarding an event that can not be proven historically or factually.
Its earlier meaning was "the story of the life of a Saint"; it was used in this sense in the 12th century, in Old French and Anglo-Norman French as legende.
This in turn derives from Church Latin legenda, "things to be read [in Church to celebrate a Saint's feast day]", from classical Latin legendus "things gathered together or read out".
