P is the park gear and is used whenever you are parking.

R is the reverse gear and is used whenever you want to drive in reverse.

N is the neutral gear and is used when you want to run the engine but dont want any power to the wheels.

D is the drive gear, which allows you to drive your car and the transmission shifts for you

3, 2, and L are the gear numbers and are used to slow your car down on steep grades without using the brakes. L is first gear, 2 is second gear, and so on.

*TIP* You can drive your automatic car somewhat like a stick shift if you start from a standstill with the shifter in the L position, and when the RPMs get high enough, move it into the 2 position, and so on.
