What does the 'Mean' stand for in Greenwich Mean Time?

If the Earth spun and moved in its orbit at a constant speed the sun would be its highest point in the sky at the Greenwich Observatory in London at precisely noon every day. But its actual movements have to be averaged out and the sun's average (or mean) position used instead. Hence Greenwich Mean Time.
