The English Channel. Excluding certain obvious exceptions (Rome, Hastings), it was very difficult and usually unsuccessful to mount a sea-borne invasion of Britain because of the low quality and ability of sea transports available. By the time it did become a serious possibility, Britain had a powerful navy and could turn back or hinder any invading fleets.
