Can you have a pet on The Sims 3?

"Currently, you cannot have a pet on The Sims 3. However, it is assumed that pets will be made available in the future, with an expansion pack."

This is incorrect you can keep a fish you have caught in a fishbowl, which you can feed and re-name, but not much else sadly.
