Is it possible that a car overheating a few times from a hose leak caused the seal on the water pump to go bad but the pump is still good just needs new sealant?

Yes , overheating can warp/distort the gaskets or internal seals but either way you'll need to replace the water pump or purchase a repair kit for the pump which will contain the seal and mounting gasket .
