All very well covered here. http://www.taligentx.com/passat/maintenance/atfchange/ VAG made it really easy.......not! Enjoy! manuals have a side plug, fill to the rim... automatics have a dipstick ...check while running in park... late model VW's need a special tool.. ...everyone should have a manual for their vehicle, and the local library should have a Shop manual available to make copies from in the Reference section...good luck:) Answer The information about the automatics having a dipstick is false. At least for the 1.8 TSFI I-4 20V engine. I dont know about the 2.8 V6. For the 1.8's though you will need to raise the vehicle up on four jackstands or with hoist and warm the engine to between 95 and 135 degrees F. the on top of the transaxle will be a plug that needs to be removed. First start the engine and move the gear shifter through all the gears ending in park. once you have done this remove the check/fill plug, if the fluid merely drips out it is fine, if it comes out faster than it is too full allow it to go until it is only dripping. if no fluid comes out then fluid will need to be added.
