Calculate the bed - days available by multiplying the total beds available in the hospital by no. of days in the year it would be available (typically between 300-350). A hospital bed cannot be available 365 days a year as it takes time to change beddings when patients leave, or a bed may need repairs and so on. Add up the the days beds were occupied during the year - say a 300 bed hospital may have 250 beds occupied on Day 1, 275 on day 2, 200 on day 3 and so on; hospitals normally keep such records (It doesnt matter if the same patient occupies the bed on day 1/2). Dividing the latter by the former will give you an average occupancy rate for the year.
