Does it fail to work both via the key in the doorlock, and with the dashboard switch? Operate the hatch unlock switch on the dashboard. Can you hear it go 'clunk' at the back of the car, or not? If not, check to see if the fuse that controls the electric unlock mechanism is good. If it has blown it might have cut the power to the little electric motor that actually releases the catch on the hatch mechanism. If it is okay, check the operation of the lock catch itself. Does it move freely? If the fuse is good, but you can't hear any 'clunking' sound, the little servo-motor that releases the catch may have failed. Anything more involved than these simple trouble-shooitng techniques may require a visit to your mechanic.
