An airplane doesnt HAVE to have a pointy nose. But aircraft designers are constantly looking for ways to reduce aerodynamic drag, and so aircraft are designed to be as streamlined as possible.

Indeed many older aircraft dont have a pointy nose at all. Look up the Boeing stearman, the P-47 thunderbolt or the "super guppy" for examples.
