The original plan for driving the golden spike, which marked the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in the United States, involved Leland Stanford, the president of the Central Pacific Railroad. However, due to poor weather conditions, he was unable to attend the ceremony. Instead, the honor went to a local politician and railroad executive, David Hewes, who drove the final spike on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Summit, Utah.
