Some potential predators of the ladybug - such as birds, frogs, wasps, Spiders, and dragonflies - have learned to associate certain colors used by ladybugs with a bad taste. Ladybugs also have developed a defense known as "reflex bleeding" which is when a small amount of alkaloid toxin is released through the joints of their exoskeleton. It is triggered by a predator attack. Without their defenses against so many predators, the ladybug population would be wiped out.
