What country invented the assault rifle?

The first "assault rifle" (meaning, a small, lightweight, fully-automatic rifle firing relatively small ammunition, suitable for light infantry and paratroops) was developed by Germany. The design was adapted by the Soviets to develop the Automat Kalashnikov model 47, or "AK-47".
