Can you bite gold

Pure gold is quite soft and you can leave teeth marks in it if you bite it. This method was often used in the past to test gold coins. Silver is added to gold to make it harder and the more silver which is added then lower the carat that the gold is assigned. In Britain 24 carat gold is pure, 22 carat is very high grade, 18 carat has much more silver and less gold and 9 carat has the least amount of gold.
