Thomas Hooker's settlement was called Hartford. Founded in 1636, it became one of the first major settlements in the Connecticut Colony. Hooker, a Puritan minister, led a group of followers to establish a community based on principles of self-governance and religious freedom. Hartford later played a significant role in the development of the Fundamental Orders, which are considered by some as the first written constitution in the Western tradition.
