What happens when a emperor penguin drops its egg?

When an Emperor Penguin drops its egg, because the ice is so cold it immediately kills the chick as it basically freezes to death. The chick is developing and therefore needs warmth to survive, and when it is dropped it loses the warmth that is vital to it and the cold Antarctic Ice kills it.
