Why is a snake not killed by his own poison?

Poisonous animals are not generally poisonous to eat. Their poisons generally need to be injected in some fashion directly into the bloodstream. Ingesting these poisons prevents this in most instances, because the digestive system breaks down the toxins before they can be introduced to the bloodstream.
