Why are third party candidates unable to speak their minds on issues more so than their peers in the two major parties?

Belonging to a party imposes restrictions on you in many ways. If you don't follow the "party line," then you may alienate some of your followers, and thus not get the all-important nomination or vote when the time comes. Third Party candidates do not have to be middle of the road to appeal to a wide range of voters.
