Scientifically, it is because seeing is our most dominant sense. For blind people who have once been able to see, it is excruciatingly hard to figure out what to do. You're handicapped, because seeing and hearing are necessary.

Psychcologically, (sorry I spelled that wrong) I would believe it is because, like they say, "Seeing is Believing." Many people do not have the faith to trust and believe in what is physically invisible before them.
