What is the difference between freestyle and rap?

When you freestyle rap, your rapping over a beat with no Words in front of you, your making it all up in your head as you go along. If you mean the rap where you record, that's when you write the lyrics on paper and record it in the studio. Some rappers have just made songs by freestyling and remembering the lyrics in the studio.
