What is a button?

A button is a fastener for clothing which is attached to one piece of fabric and pushed through a slit called a buttonhole in another and will not easily be pulled back through the slit, thus fastening the two. Buttons come in all shapes and sizes.

The Word can also be used for other button-shaped objects, especially a device for making a selection by pushing. These can be mechanical, electrical or virtual in character.
