In Inkheart chapters 51-59 how did Mo signal Meggie before she began to read?

She reads out Tinker Bell by accident when she was in the cell with the writer and later she read out the Tin Soldier. She is able to return the tin soldier to his story but is unable to get to Tinkerbell to do so with her.
